Michael Jackson Doctor Conrad Murray To Be Arraigned

Murray to head to trial in death of Jackson following Tuesday hearing.
By Gil Kaufman

Cardiologist Dr. Conrad Murray, the only person charged in the June 2009 death of Michael Jackson, will be arraigned on Tuesday morning (January 25) on an involuntary manslaughter charge. Murray, who was serving as the 50-year-old pop icon's personal physician at the time, is expected to plead not guilty in the case.

According to CNN, the hearing in front of Los Angeles County Superior Court Judge Michael Pastor, is only slated to last a few minutes. While Murray has the right to demand a trial within 60 days, it is not expected that a date will be set for one on Tuesday.

After more than a week of testimony, Pastor ruled during a preliminary hearing in early January that there was enough evidence to bring Murray's case to trial. In the meantime, Murray remains free on $75,000 bond, but Pastor blocked the doctor from using his California medical license until the trial is completed.

"Michael is not with us today because of an utterly inept, incompetent, reckless doctor — the defendant Conrad Murray," Los Angeles County Deputy District Attorney David Walgren said in his final arguments in the preliminary hearing, where a series of witnesses recounted Murray's actions during the minutes and hours before and after Jackson's death. The King of Pop died as a result of what the Los Angeles County coroner's office called acute propofol poisoning, a reference to a powerful surgical anesthetic that the singer reportedly requested as a sleep aid to combat chronic insomnia.

While prosecutors appear to be building a case that Murray acted recklessly in attending to Jackson in the singer's final hours, CNN reported that the doctor's lawyers appeared satisfied with the results of the preliminary hearing thanks to some testimony they got from prosecution witnesses that might help raise some reasonable doubt about their client's guilt at trial.

"I think the prosecution is going to change their tactics in this case," defense lawyer J. Michael Flanagan said after the preliminary hearing. "It's not the same as what they gave in opening statements." The defense reportedly is set to argue that it was Jackson himself who administered the final, fatal dose of propofol after waking in a panic from a fitful night of sleep. One of the prosecution's expert witnesses in the case admitted under cross-examination that he made a math mistake and that the recalculation supports the defense theory that Jackson may have given himself the dose of propofol that killed him.

CNN reported that Dr. Richard Ruffalo, an anesthesiologist hired by the prosecution, was the last witness to take the stand and his admission about making a mistake on the calculation of the level of propofol in Jackson's stomach fluid reportedly elicited gasps from the members of Jackson's family who were sitting in the hearing room.

Murray's lawyers have suggested that a frustrated Jackson may have poured the anesthetic — which is administered intravenously — into his juice bottle while the doctor was out of his bedroom. "Now it doesn't make sense unless he ingested it orally in a huge amount," Ruffalo testified. The anesthesiologist added that Murray could still be at fault for leaving dangerous drugs near a patient who was allegedly addicted to sedatives and sleep aids.

"It's like leaving a syringe next to a heroin addict," Ruffalo stated. "If he's not getting what he wants, when you leave the room he might reach for it himself ... Either way, it doesn't matter. He abandoned his patient and didn't resuscitate appropriately." Ruffalo said Murray should have anticipated that Jackson, who had previously asked to inject himself with the drug, might potentially administer it to himself. "He gets upset if he doesn't get his milk," he said, explaining that Jackson often referred to propofol as his "milk."

In addition, the pathologist who conducted Jackson's autopsy acknowledged it was possible, though improbable, that the singer gave himself the fatal propofol dose. Speaking to police two days after Jackson's death, Murray told investigators that a sleepless Jackson had begged him for more propofol on the day he died. The King of Pop was in the midst of a grueling series of rehearsals for his planned "This Is It" comeback shows at London's O2 Arena at the time of his death.

A civil lawsuit filed last year by Jackson's mother against the producer of the concerts, AEG Live, alleged that the company had warned the entertainer several weeks before he died that if he missed any more rehearsals they were going to "pull the plug" on the gigs, which the cash-strapped Jackson was depending on to revive his stalled career.

'Drive Angry': The Reviews Are In!

Should you hit the road with Nicolas Cage? See what the critics have to say.
By Eric Ditzian

"Drive Angry" marks three-straight supernatural films for Nicolas Cage, though each could not be more different. "The Sorcerer's Apprentice" was a Disney-driven tale of magical realism. "Season of the Witch" dove into the intersection of medieval black magic and campy B-movie wackiness. And "Drive Angry" literally begins with Cage driving a muscle car straight outta hell with the devil's henchman fast on his heels and doesn't slow down as it splashes blood and fire across the screen.

All three flicks share something else in common: below-average reviews. "Sorcerer's" and "Season" each went on to conjure up lukewarm box-office receipts. Can "Drive Angry" break the spell? Check out what the critics are saying and decide if the new 3-D film is the right choice for you this weekend.

The Story
"[It] may be a bit too slickly self-aware for its own good, but it's also rivetingly paced, outrageously funny and makes retina-scorching use of the new 3D technology. Nicolas Cage is on teeth-baring, eye-rolling form as John Milton (nice), the deceased felon who busts out of hell to track down the Southern death cult who kidnapped his baby granddaughter. Hooking up with mouthy muscle-car-driving white-trash waitress Piper (Amber Heard), Milton sets off in pursuit, all the while attempting to avoid the attentions of Satan's right-hand man, The Accountant (a majestically arch William Fichtner)." -- Tom Huddleston, Time Out

Crazy Nic Cage
"A little respect, if you please, for His Satanic Majesty Nicolas Cage. Nobody goes off the deep end like Nic. Nobody gives better value in bad movies than the sleepy-eyed Oscar winner with a gift for picking bad movies. 'Drive Angry' is a very entertaining B, C or D-movie, an over-the-top and in-your-face grindhouse gore, guns and 'Gun it' picture that's about epic shootouts, bone-snapping brawls, bare breasts and muscle cars. The gunplay is funny and the sex hilarious in this 'Ghost Rider is Gone in 60 Seconds' mashup." -- Roger Moore, Orlando Sentinel

The 3-D
" 'Drive Angry' is intensely bloody, violent and carries quite a few payoffs that are well delivered. It's also a movie you'd actually want to see in 3-D, unlike so many frauds in the marketplace these days. In fact, Lussier, who directed 'My Bloody Valentine 3D,' shows his growth as a 3-dimensional director by taking 'Drive Angry' to new heights. Seeing it in Real D, the depth was astounding, and Lussier throws a few CGI tricks right in the viewer's face. Even more impressive was his flashback sequence that could easily become one of the most influential in the 3-D age (the way he layers three 'thoughts' at once is mind-blowing visually). In short, it's worth the extra few bucks." -- Brad Miska, Bloody Disgusting

Going Grindhouse
" 'Drive Angry' is loud and busy, and it's rarely boring. But it's also never really good. 'Drive Angry' comes at the tail end of the grindhouse revival trend, and while it's better made than films like 'Machete' or the scores of indie films that followed in Quentin Tarantino's wake, it succumbs to the same problem so many of those movies do: it's a movie about the things that the filmmakers think are cool, and that's never cool. 'Drive Angry' isn't about anything, it's just a series of ideas that struck Lussier and Farmer as awesome, strung together at feature length. There's a lot of balls in Drive Angry, and even some brains, but no heart." -- Devin Faraci, Badass Digest

The Final Word
" 'Drive Angry' is, in the end, a genre romp. It's not aiming any higher than that. But it is made with real skill and style, and there's such knowledge of genre in the way they have built the script and both embraced and avoided certain conventions that it makes me feel like we're just seeing Farmer and Lussier warm up. Hopefully they'll keep working with collaborators as game as their partners in this particular crime, because 'Drive Angry' is a white-knuckle ride worth taking." -- Drew McWeeny, HitFix

'Two and a Half Men' Shut Down Following Charlie Sheen Rant

'Two and a Half Men' Shut Down Following Charlie Sheen Rant

Charlie Sheen has really gone and done it this time.

Just hours after the actor's bizarre and vitriolic raido interview on "The Alex Jones Show" on Thursday, CBS and Warner Bros. announced that they are pulling the plug on the actor's top-rated sitcom Two and a Half Men for the rest of the season. "Based on the totality of Charlie Sheen's statements, conduct and condition, CBS and Warner Bros. Television have decided to discontinue production of Two and a Half Men for the remainder of the season," the companies said in a statement.

There were to have been eight episodes of the show left this season, though CBS had recently cut that order down to four. According to Entertainment Weekly, Sheen will not be paid his reported $1.2 million-per-episode salary for the missed shows, and it remains to be seen whether the crew and rest of the cast will be compensated.

The move to stop production on the show came shortly after Sheen's seriously strange rant on "The Alex Jones Show," in which the troubled star claimed he's 100 percent sober, used an ethnic slur against Two And A Half Men boss Chuck Lorre (referring to him as Chaime Levine), called Thomas Jefferson (yes, the Declaration of Independence guy) a "p***y," and said he was a Vatican assassin. (Was that last one supposed to be a metaphor, or does Sheen actually believe he's living in The Da Vinci Code? We wouldn't be surprised either way.)  If you want to try and make heads or tails of it, you can listen to the interview here. Good luck.

So yes, the actor continues to defend himself against accusations of being a crazy guy on drugs... by acting like a crazy guy on drugs. (Does anybody else see the flaw in this strategy?) Here are a few things (besides those mentioned above) that the Two And A Half Men star revealed during the course of the interview, accompanied by Sheen's own words. (And if the quotes seem confusing, it's not you. Trust us.)

He has a new tattoo.
"It's the banner from [the film Apocalypse Now], but falling from it is the apple from The Giving Tree. There's my life. Deal with it."

He thinks Alcoholics Anonymous is a cult.
"I have a disease? Bulls***. I cured it... with my mind... it's all good guys. Quit panicking. No panic, no judgment... You can kill me but you do not have the right to judge me... I can't use the word sober because that's a term from those people, and I have cleansed myself. I have closed my eyes and in a nanosecond I cured myself from this ridiculous... It's just the work of sissies. The only thing I'm addicted to right now is winning. You know? This bootleg cult arrogantly referred to as AA now supports a 5 percent success rate. My success rate is 100 percent. Do the math! One of their stupid mottos is 'Don't be special, be one of us.' Newsflash: I am special and I will never be one of you.'Oh, we have to all sit in here and touch ourselves and frown.' Well, you don't look like you're having a lot of fun. I'm going to hang out with these two smokin' hotties and fly privately around the world. It might be lonely up here but I sure like the view."

Contrary to rumors, ex-wife Brooke Mueller is no longer in the picture.
"Goodbye, Brooke, and good luck in your travels; you're going to need it. Badly. She's not there now and we are winning."

He is a magical airplane.
"I'm sorry, man, but I've got magic. I've got poetry in my fingertips. Most of the time -- and this includes naps -- I'm an F-18, bro. And I will destroy you in the air. I will deploy my ordinance to the ground."

He also has a secret army. Or something.

"People say, 'Oh, you'd better work through your resentments.' Yeah, no. I'm gonna hang on to them, and they're gonna fuel my attack. And they're going to fuel the battle cry of my deadly and dangerous and secret and silent soldiers. Because they're all around you. Sorry if you thought you were messing with one dude!"

And Sheen didn't stop there. After finding out that CBS had nixed the rest of the season of Two and a Half Men, Sheen sent a text message to RadarOnline.com, calling the decision "crazy" and "sad" -- and revealed that he may be ditching CBS for a new HBO show called Sheen's Corner. "I'm close to securing a deal with HBO for a 10 show guarantee," Sheen told the site. "It will be epic, all types of guests and we will focus on the truth and the absurd!"

Michael Jackson Doctor Conrad Murray Ordered To Stand Trial

Murray faces manslaughter charges in the singer's death; his medical license has also been suspended.

Dr. Conrad Murray has been ordered to stand trial for manslaughter in the death of Michael Jackson.

According to The Associated Press, Superior Court Judge Michael Pastor made the decision after a six-day preliminary hearing during which witnesses testified that the Houston cardiologist administered a dose of the powerful anesthetic propofol and other sedatives then left the pop star unmonitored.

During the course of the hearing, testimony was given that Murray ordered hundreds of bottles of propofol in the months before Jackson's death. The AP report also cited the fact that the prosecutors concluded their case with testimony from two doctors who said Murray acted outside the standard of medical care when he administered propofol and failed to provide proper care.

Other damning testimony included that of Jackson's bodyguard, who said that on the morning of the singer's death, it appeared that Murray didn't know how to administer CPR to his dying patient.

Judge Pastor also granted a request by the California Medical Board to suspend Murray's license to practice medicine in the state. Pastor said he made the decision in the interest of public safety and ordered Murray to notify every district in which he practices of the decision within 24 hours. Murray has clinics in Houston and Las Vegas.

Murray, 57, has pleaded not guilty, and his attorneys have argued that he did not give Jackson anything that should have killed him. Murray faces up to four years in prison if convicted.

'Hangover Part II' Trailer: The Five Coolest Moments

From the monkey on Bradley Cooper's back to Ed Helms' tribal face tattoo, we can't wait to hit this destination wedding.
By Eric Ditzian

Ed Helms, Bradley Cooper and Zack Galifianakis in "The Hangover Part II"
Photo: Warner Bros.

Todd Phillips promised and he delivered. Last week, the writer/director — who these days can't seem to make an R-rated comedy that doesn't do mega-business across the globe — assured MTV News that the teaser trailer for "Hangover Part II" would be popping up online this week.

And pop up it has. True to Phillips' words the footage is "truly a teaser," with almost no dialogue and little hint about the events surrounding what clearly turns an innocent destination wedding in Thailand into a life-altering disaster. We do, however, contest Phillips' speculation that the teaser "might end up frustrating more than solving questions." While questions are hardly solved, we couldn't be more pumped finally to feast our eyes on official footage from the Memorial Day weekend release. Here are our picks for the five coolest moments:

Hotel or Prison?
In "The Hangover," Bradley Cooper and his pals find their way into one of the chicest suites in Las Vegas. Their digs in Thailand, alas, look more like the confines of a prison — less "King and I" than "Brokedown Palace." There's no way that this was their original resort locale. It's anybody's guess how and why they end up in this dump.

Say Goodbye to That Security Deposit
This image is a direct homage to the post-party scene in "Hangover": After swilling what turned out to be roofie-infused booze, the friends awoke in their trashed Vegas suite, each one nursing a nuclear headache as a tiger roamed freely in the bathroom. This time around, the morning after takes place in a decidedly less glamorous environment and the big cat is replaced by an oversize cockroach.

The Wolf Pack is Back
In the original film, Zach Galifianakis proudly — and nonsensically — welcomed the crew into his wolf pack. Disaster ensued. This shot shows the gang back together again. Missing, interestingly, is Justin Bartha, who went missing in the first flick and whose absence in the new trailer seems to lend credence to the rumor that he'll once again disappear in "Part II."

Is This Kind of Nice?
The trailer's first piece of dialogue belongs to Galifianakis and it's, predictably, hilariously detached from what is clearly a seriously bad situation. Why else is a monkey wrapped around Cooper's neck? Why does Galifianakis look like a blind man shaved his noggin? And about Ed Helms' face ...

Mike Tyson, Trendsetter
Iron Mike's cameo in "Hangover" was one of the comedy's finest pleasures. And as we've seen from "Part II" photos, Helms somehow finds himself branded with Tyson's most infamous identifier: a tribal face tattoo. For a guy about to get married, that's just not a good look. As he says before hanging his head, "Oh god!"

Justin Bieber Vintage Video: His First Meeting With Usher

Justin Timberlake also wanted to sign Bieber, 'Never Say Never' star said in 2009.

Just as the world was learning who Justin Bieber was, MTV News caught up with the shaggy-haired singer in September 2009. He was gearing up to release his debut album, My World, and plotting his pop-world domination. In the year and a half since that interview, Bieber has done the nearly impossible, launching himself into the pop mega-sphere.

In the chat, Bieber recalled how he and his manager, Scooter Braun, met and eventually got big names interested in signing the teen.

"My manager found me on YouTube. He flew me out to Atlanta for the first time — I'd never actually been on a plane before. He flew me to Atlanta where i was going to the studio to meet some people," he recalled.

"And Usher happened to roll up in his Range Rover. I ran up to him, and I was like, 'Usher, I love your songs. Want me to sing you one?' The politest possible way he could say no, he did. ... I took the hint. I didn't get to sing for him: He had to run into a studio session."

But later, Usher was beckoning the teen back to the ATL. "He actually watched my videos — after my manager got to talking to him — and was like, 'I should have let this kid sing,' and flew me back to Atlanta where I got to sing for him in a proper setting. A week later, I had a meeting with Justin Timberlake, who also wanted to sign me, so they both kind of wanted me."

As the story goes, Bieber went with Usher, and the two never looked back.

"As far as Usher being my mentor, he's definitely given me words of wisdom. I hear it from everybody, but definitely to hear it from Usher is great, just to stay humble and grounded is very important," he explained.

"There's a lot of people, especially young stars, that have gone down the wrong path, and I definitely plan to stay humble and stay grounded and keep my family first, because that stuff really is important in life."

On Friday, Justin Bieber's 3-D documentary, "Never Say Never," opens. The film takes a look at how the teen star worked to hit it big. MTV News has been chatting with him along the way, from the time he first burst on the scene in 2009 until now, as he embarks on a huge 2011 that will include a tour and more new music.
