Usher, Ke$ha And More Help Dance Music Go Pop In 2010

But is it here to stay? Our music-industry experts weigh in.
By Akshay Bhansali

In 2010, pop princesses, R&B icons and chart-dominating newcomers all danced to the same beat. Not only did dance music go pop, but pop music caught the club-music bug.

Between Katy Perry's "Firework," Ke$ha's "We R Who We R," Rihanna's "Only Girl (In the World)," Enrique Iglesias' "I Like It," Usher's "DJ Got Us Fallin' in Love" and "OMG" and countless other singles, established artists definitely looked to dance beats for surefire hits. And two of this year's biggest success stories in music were Jason Derülo and Taio Cruz; could there be a soul left in this country who hasn't heard "Dynamite" or "In My Head"?

The love went both ways, with dance music's biggest stars finding mainstream success this year. Dance-music maestro deadmau5 took up house-artist duties at this year's VMAs, and Swedish House Mafia and Usher teamed up for a medley of their gems at the American Music Awards.

So how did this happen? We caught up with some music-industry experts to get their takes.

"You definitely saw tempos go up this year," Jon Caramanica of The New York Times told MTV News. "And I think what you had are a lot of producers who are really familiar with nightclub stuff. They are familiar with Europe. Things are happening on a more global scale now."

"I think everything from Europe, and sometimes even Asia, it comes to America, and we just adopt things a little bit slower," said Jared Eng of JustJared.com. "I think it was just a change. People like different types of music at different times. And dance was of this moment."

Noah Callahan of Complex magazine added: "I think 2010 saw the merging of the pop and dance genres. Pop artists realized that there were best practices that could be borrowed from dance music. And, ultimately, [all] pop music that has been made in the past 20 years had ended up being remixed for the club by dance artists. I think they basically just cut out the middleman and went straight there."

Dance music being introduced into the hip-hop and R&B realms was particularly notable this year.

"I think David Guetta kind of at the end of last year and the beginning of this year spearheaded it," said freelance writer Julianne Escobedo Shepherd. "He produced a lot of tracks. I think as trends go, people revile 'unst-unst.' But it's just coming back around. Big-room techno was a way for people to get decadent in a year that no one could get decadent."

"You have someone like will.i.am, who's like, 'Well, I spent all this time in Ibiza, and this is what they are doing,' and he wants to find a way to bring that into his music," Caramanica said of the Black Eyed Peas mastermind. "R&B especially became dance music. And especially with your Jason Derülos, Taio Cruzes. Guys like that would have literally been blocked at the border two years ago. That would not have made it through customs. And now all of a sudden they have #1 songs. I think will.i.am had a lot to do with that last year."

Elliott Wilson of RapRadar.com added: "It's actually even affected hip-hop. I was talking to Q-Tip, and his next record, I feel like that's gonna kind of go in that vein. I know that was also Jay-Z's thought process with Blueprint 3 at first, that he wanted to make a little bit more of a world music [vibe], a little more dancey. I think the kids today want to go to the clubs. They wanna have a good time. They wanna dance. So I think the artists of today are trying to kind of feed that audience."

"I think it's caught on this year because the people who've done it have been successful," offered Clover Hope of Vibe magazine. "Like 'OMG,' with usher, he didn't have success until he made a dance record. He had 'There Goes My Baby' and these really, like, adult-contemporary records that didn't really catch on. And then once you see that everybody is doing it and that people are liking it, they are like, 'OK, let me just try this out.' It's like Auto-Tune. Like, 'Let me see what I sound like on a record by David Guetta.' They end up liking it and doing more of it."

So does the club-music trend have staying power. According to our tastemakers, not so much.

"I do think it's a blip," Caramanica said. "I don't think that's gonna be something that lasts in America. I think this is gonna be a moment we'll all look back on and go, 'Wasn't that weird when Jason Derülo and Taio Cruz had #1 records?"

"At some point, these R&B artists will get kind of sick of it and be like, 'Let me go back to my soul background,' " Hope said. "When you actually have to say something, dance doesn't really lend itself to substance. And I think that R&B artists, they really want to talk about love and in a deep way, and to do that, you need to do, like, a soul or a traditional R&B record. I want to say that it's kind of a fad."

"I think music is very cyclical," Eng offered. "So I think dance music might be here for a little bit, but I'm sure it will phase out at some point."

Wilson called dance music "the sound of today. I think that people want more aggressive, faster beats, and I think that that probably has legs until at least next summer."

What do you think? Is dance music here to stay? Let us know in the comments!

Roots Host Genre-Spanning, Star-Studded Pre-Grammy Jam Session

Ne-Yo, Sara Bareilles, Chaka Khan were among the many notable artists who took the stage on Saturday at the hip-hop collective's annual bash.

HOLLYWOOD, California — On Saturday night, the eve of the 53rd Grammy Awards, the Roots were unstoppable, unpredictable and unprecedented as they took the stage to perform their seventh annual Pre-Grammy Jam Session. But to call the event just a jam session would be quite the understatement. Similar to the years prior, the Roots played for hours on end, covering every genre of music from the blues to hip-hop to funk and rock and roll while inviting fellow musician friends — both old school and new — onstage.

"Every Jam Session you expect the unexpected," explained drummer ?uestlove when MTV News caught up with him just before his band took the stage. "We invited a whole bunch of people down and we are going to see how good our memory banks are when they start putting us on the spot and asking us for their songs."

For the first time, the Roots decided to switch up locations, leaving the Key Club behind in favor of Hollywood's Music Box club. The venue provided a larger space for more fans and celebrities, such as Drew Barrymore, Juliette Lewis and Craig Robinson, who opted to attend this more laidback event rather than the exclusive Clive Davis Pre-Grammy party taking place close by.

Just a few minutes before midnight, Roots pal/boss Jimmy Fallon appeared onstage sitting solo in a stool, doing his best Neil Young impersonation as he sang the lyrics to Willow Smith's "Whip My Hair" — a hilarious skit he's been known to do on "Late Night With Jimmy Fallon." Upon finishing, he welcomed the audience to the event and urged everyone to get excited as the Roots made their entrance.

Check out photos of Jimmy Fallon's performance at the Roots' Jam Session.

"My show has been on for two years now and it wouldn't be where it is today without these guys," Fallon gushed as he and Roots rapper Tariq "Black Thought" Trotter suddenly broke into a rendition of the Bee Gees' "Stayin' Alive" while the crowd cheered. Shortly after the comical warm-up, Fallon exited the stage and the Roots kicked things off with some of their known tracks — "Going On," "How I Got Over" and "Here I Come." The first special guest to appear was 10-time Grammy winner Bobby McFerrin. Black Thought praised the "Don't Worry Be Happy" singer as a "funk percussionist" while he free-styled and skittle-le-bopped around stage.

Roughly around 12:30 a.m., Sarah Bareilles joined the unpredictable set list, seeming to take the crowd by surprise. But once the pop songstress started singing "Son of a Preacher Man," the audience quickly took to her soulful side. The Roots then introduced Guy Sebastian, a soulful singer from Australia whose recent blooper clip as a judge on the "X Factor" was made famous when ?uestlove remixed it on "Late Night."

As the show went on, with the crowd seeming to grow from 300 to 500 people, the Roots began to introduce some of the old-school performers. Chuck Brown, a.k.a. the Godfather of Go-Go, came out in full funk getup and busted out with the classic "Bustin' Loose." Young Chris performed two songs, including "Can't Stop, Won't Stop." Too Short made an appearance and treated the crowd to "Blow the Whistle," while blues legend Taj Mahal, Lalah Hathaway, Booker T. Jones and Betty Wright all added a little something to this incredible night. And while the audience certainly was grooving to these performers, things really perked up when Black Thought called up to the stage the "Queen Diva" herself, Chaka Khan. Cameras were clicking and phones were held in the air while the R&B legend sang "Tell Me Something Good."

In between acts, the Roots never forgot to steer the focus back to themselves, as they mixed things up by providing solo sessions throughout the night. One bandmember who never disappoints is metal maniac Captain Kirk Douglas, who ripped through his guitar solos while giving the audience a taste of some rock and roll classics like Guns N' Roses' "Sweet Child O' Mine," George Thorogood's "Bad to the Bone" and Bo Diddley's "Who Do You Love?"

Even at 2 a.m., guests continued to roll onto the stage. Estelle, Ne-Yo, Ryan Leslie and Melanie Fiona all performed hit after hit after hit. And while there didn't seem to be an end to the Roots' jam session, fans didn't appear to mind one bit. While most of the industry was giving it a rest with music's biggest night less than 24 hours away, attendees of this bash were rewarded for their stamina. ?uestlove needn't have worried — the Roots proved that their memory banks were well up to par.

Don't miss "Snooki & Sway: Live From the Grammys," a red-carpet live stream kicking off tonight at 6 p.m. ET on MTV.com. And stick with us all Grammy night for coverage of the red carpet, the show, the afterparties and beyond!

Britney Spears' Femme Fatale Twitter Trend Keeps Rolling

Title of pop star's March 29 release is #10 longest-running trend on social-networking site.
By Nuzhat Naoreen

Britney Spears' upcoming album, Femme Fatale, doesn't hit shelves until March 29, but it's already breaking records.

The title, which has been trending worldwide on Twitter since Spears first announced it exactly a week ago, just nabbed the #10 spot on a list of the longest running Twitter trends gathered by Twend. It, a site that tracks topics on the social-networking site.

"Can't believe Femme Fatale has been trending 6 days. You guys are my motivation every single day. I love u all!" Spears wrote Tuesday on Twitter, where she has more than 6.8 million followers; she also included a link to the official announcement on her site.

The top 10 list uses Twitter's algorithms to tally the number of times a topic has trended since May 2010, when Twend. It was founded.

"It's culturally important," said Nick DiFilippo, co-founder of Twend.it, who added that the popularity of entertainment topics on Twitter validates the notion that social-networking is an effective advertising tool that allows artists to reach their fans more directly. "They are finding a way to connect with their fanbase."

The ranking puts Spears in good company: Femme Fatale, the only music-related Twitter trend to break the top 10, joins "Inception," which is holding strong at #1 after trending for a total of 39 days. "Inception" was one of 2010's biggest box-office hits, grossing nearly $292 million domestically.

Of course, success on Twitter doesn't always lead to great sales. Other pop culture strongholds on the list include the movies "Last Airbender" at #9, and "Scott Pilgrim," positioned at #5. Both films disappointed at the box office.

Also noticeably absent from the list are Justin Bieber and Lady Gaga, both of whom were among the top five most-tweeted-about people in 2010. So while Bieber and Gaga each have strong followings on Twitter, Twend.it's DiFilippo doesn't think Spears is in danger of being pushed out of the top 10. In fact, he predicts Femme Fatale will quickly move up on the list.

"The way these trends go is once they hit momentum it gets hard to stop them," he said. "Something like an album releasing, especially by one of the biggest pop artists around, it's going to have some momentum, so I do predict it's going to go a bit higher. I could see it going up to the sixth, fifth place at least."

While the album doesn't come out until next month, Britney fans have plenty to look forward to: The pop star has been tweeting daily teasers to her upcoming video for "Hold It Against Me," which premieres on MTV on February 17 at 9:56 p.m. ET.

Lady Gaga's 'Born This Way' Gets Praise From Hayley Williams, Lindsay Lohan, Others

As the Internet lights up about Lady Gaga's brand-new single, "Born This Way," various celebrities took to Twitter on Friday (February 11) to dish their two cents on the pop superstar's highly anticipated tune.

Paramore's Hayley Williams expressed her excitement for Egypt's recent historic landmark and followed up with a tweet about Mother Monster's new dance track. "YES EGYPT!!! So inspired by your perseverance and your bravery. and speaking of liberation, I just heard 'Born This Way' and loved it. DON'T BE A DRAG JUST BE A QUEEN."

Even before the new song hit the airwaves, troubled star Lindsay Lohan was eager to hear the song as the starlet took to her Twitter, writing, "I'm so excited for Lady Gaga's 'Born This Way' to drop!"

Despite the immense hype surrounding "Born This Way," some stars, including "American Idol" finalist Chris Daughtry, pointed out the song's similarities to Madonna's 1989 classic "Express Yourself."

"Just listened to a clip of Lady Gaga 'Born This Way' and I gotta say ... sounds a lot like 'Express Yourself' from Madonna. Thoughts?" he tweeted. "OK. Good. A lotta peeps are saying the same thing so maybe I won't get raked over the coals :) I thought I was crazy for a second. And by the way ... I'm not dogging it. Haven't even heard it all ... that was just my first impresh."

While Perez Hilton has raved about the song in previous interviews with MTV News, the gossip blogger welcomed the Madonna reference, tweeting, "Express Yourself 2.0 is what people are saying? I'll happily take that!!! #BornThisWayFriday."

Khloe Kardashian showed the track some love by re-tweeting Perez's message and tweeting to a fan, " 'Born This Way'!!!!!! Woooohoooo I love you more."

Internet sensation Simon Curtis also gushed about the song, tweeting, "Born This Way = 2011's Express Yourself - brilliant work @ladygaga."

Charlie Sheen Tells UCLA Baseball Team Don't Do Drugs

Charlie Sheen Tells UCLA Baseball Team Don't Do Drugs

Charlie Sheen certainly isn't the healthiest star around, but those 36-hour benders do require some athletic stamina! So when the troubled Two and a Half Men star crossed paths with the UCLA baseball team, it came as no surprise the actor gave the Bruins a little pep talk.

Sheen -- a baseball fanatic -- was at UCLA taking batting practice with Major League pals Coco Crisp, Eric Davis, Brandon Watson and Milton Bradley just before the Bruins hit the field for their own practice on Thursday. UCLA's head coach John Savage, who X-17 reports is helping Sheen get into shape, approached Charlie and asked him to say a few words to the kids about the dangers of drug use.

The actor obliged, and the Bruins' catcher, Richard Brehaut, later shared Sheen's remarks via Twitter. Brehaut wrote: "'Don't do crack, drink chocolate milk, and enjoy every moment.... that's all I got.'-Charlie Sheen. That's what he told our baseball team today."

Indeed it was. TMZ has a video of Sheen bestowing those words of wisdom on the Bruins, though Sheen said "your moment" and not "every moment." The video shows that the players are clearly amused, laughing heartily at the actor and clapping for his anti-drug speech.

The soon-to-be divorced Sheen is currently rehabbing from home, halting the production of his hit CBS sitcom Two and a Half Men. In a good faith gesture, the actor has agreed to help pony up one-third of the salaries for the crew members who aren't getting paid during the show's hiatus.

To these college guys, Sheen probably seems like a playboy who is partying it up, making bank and living the life. But hopefully these young athletes take his words to heart, avoid the crack and kick back with a nice big glass of chocolate milk.

What do you think of Charlie Sheen's pep talk to the UCLA baseball team? Chime in below!
