'It's definitely in keeping with the old ones,' movie's star says about confusion over the Ridley Scott film.

Ever since a Deadline New York report last month, there has been a lot of confusion about Ridley Scott's newest "Alien" film, which marks the director's return to the franchise more than 30 years after he brought the first "Alien" movie to the big screen.
After word of the project first broke in the summer of 2009, the new report suggested the film was in fact not an "Alien" prequel but rather a film born of "Alien DNA" that is "unique, large and provocative." Yet at the same time, contrary to this new spin, we were hearing that the film — titled "Prometheus" — was in fact a prequel to the franchise. Now, this all might be a matter of semantics (not to mention movie marketing), but there's no doubt that confusion has surrounded the exact nature of the production.
So when we had the chance to speak with one of the stars of the new film, Michael Fassbender, while he was promoting "Jane Eyre," we asked him to shed some light on these conflicting judgments. And as he told us, "Prometheus" is most definitely an "Alien" movie.
"Absolutely," he said. "There's a definite connecting vein. You realize you're part of something else. But it's definitely in keeping with the old ones."
What's more, Fassbender said the new film is more closely related to the slow-burning "Alien," which Scott directed, than James Cameron's more action-oriented follow-up, "Aliens."
"It is more sort of the original one," Fassbender explained. "There's things happening and building, and the intelligence of the first two-thirds of the film gets you ready for the action ... it's creeping, it's sinister, things are happening and building, all the different intrigues and politics going on between the different relationships onboard."
That's not to say Damon Lindelof, who worked on the script with Scott, was blowing smoke when he said things to Deadline like, "In a world flooded with prequels, sequels and reboots, I was incredibly struck by just how original Ridley's vision was for this movie."
Fassbender told us that while "Prometheus" fits squarely within "Alien" mythology, the film delivers "a whole new revelation."

We look at the many film projects the birthday boy has in store post-'Breaking Dawn.'

A very happy birthday shout-out goes to Taylor Lautner, who, just one year into adulthood, is the highest-grossing member of "The Twilight Saga" trio and one of the hottest young adult stars in Hollywood. This coming year will undoubtedly be one of the biggest years of the 19-year-old's career as he finishes filming "Breaking Dawn" and embarks on his journey as a leading man after "The Twilight Saga" is finished.
In honor of his big day, we're taking a look at all the projects Lautner has on the horizon. If his current trajectory is anything to judge by, we have a feeling he will be even more popular and earning even more box-office gold at this time next year.
First up is "Abduction," which is being described as a thriller along the lines of the Jason Bourne films. He's done intense amounts of training for the film and it will be his first chance to show off his chops as an action star. It also helps that his co-star, Lily Collins, is another big up-and-comer (she'll star in the adaptation of "City of Bones") and that their combined star power should propel his first major starring role post-"Twilight Saga."
Rounding out 2011 is the much-anticipated release of "The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn - Part 1," which will feature Lautner more than any other film in the series. If the film stays true to the book (and there's no guarantee that it will), about half of it will be shown from his character Jacob's perspective, and it will be up to him and his wolf pack to carry the film. He also ends up with certainly one of the most interesting love interests he's likely to have onscreen during the course of his career.
Aside from the release of "Breaking Dawn - Part 2" in late 2012, Lautner has a couple of other big films on the horizon as well. He returns to the young adult genre in the upcoming adaptation of "Incarceron," and he's shaping up to land a pretty hot co-star for the film. Last we heard, Emma Watson, Blake Lively and Jennifer Lawrence are short-listed for his romantic lead.
And though it's been about a year since we heard major news on Lautner's other upcoming film "Stretch Armstrong," it's likely that he'll start filming it once he's done with "Breaking Dawn" in the next couple of months. It's slated for 2012 and will also likely be his first film in 3-D. It's a good thing, then, that he will "not wear a shirt" during the entire film.
Last but not least, Lautner has his third action film in the form of "Cancun." It's being described as "Taken" meets "Die Hard" and will be produced by Lautner's own production company, Tailor Made. Again, there hasn't been a lot of news on the film recently, but we're excited to see him show off his martial arts skills some more on the big screen.

'Can't wait any longer, single coming Friday,' singer tweets.
By Jocelyn Vena
Those of you who can't wait until Sunday to hear Lady Gaga's new single no longer have to. The singer announced Monday (February 7) that she will release "Born This Way" two days early, on Friday. "Can't wait any longer, single coming Friday," Gaga tweeted.
Nothing else new is known about the song itself, though Lady Gaga released its feel-good lyrics late last month. At the VMAs last September, Gaga sang part of the chorus, but nothing else of the song has been heard in the months since. On the song's chorus, she sings, "I'm beautiful in my way/ 'Cause God makes no mistakes/ I'm on the right track, baby/ I was born this way/ Don't hide yourself in regret/ Just love yourself and you're set/ I'm on the right track baby/ I was born this way."
Just six days ago, when the single was still slated to debut at the Grammy Awards on February 13, she had this tease for her fans: "So many nights I've wept, too many thoughts to say. But now it's less than 12 days left, till I was Born This Way. X Mother Monster."
One person who has heard the song is Gaga's pal, Perez Hilton. He spoke to MTV News about the track, off Gaga's May album release of the same name, and gave it a glowing review.
"Fans can expect all the hype to be true with 'Born This Way' and with the album," he shared. "And you know what? It is a very gay song — unapologetically, gay-in-your-face gay — but it's also a universal song that can relate to everyone. To all of us outsiders, to all of us freaks, to all of us who feel different. And the music is undeniable. It sounds like a smash. It is a smash. It is one of the best songs of Gaga's career."

While critics bemoan high ticket prices, director says his 'fanbase is already paying 60, 65 bucks to see me stand there by myself.'
By Eric Ditzian, with reporting by Josh Horowitz
People were pissed off. Kevin Smith had seemed to indicate that he was going to hold a one-of-a-kind auction at the Sundance Film Festival last month, selling the rights to "Red State" to the highest bidder. Instead, after the genre-bending, horror-meets-thriller-meets-buddy-comedy flick premiered, Smith announced he was bypassing the traditional distribution model and releasing the movie himself.
And people were even more pissed when they found out what that strategy would entail — namely, $60 or more to see "Red State" as Smith took it on a road show across the country. As the writer/director himself put it during a live-stream interview with MTV News, "I saw a lot of people saying online, '60 bucks to see a movie? F--- him!' " But those people, Smith argued, are missing the point. He and his producing pals are seeking a way to avoid getting sucked down the Hollywood marketing rabbit hole and instead bring the movie directly to their fans — building buzz along the way — before the film hit theaters nationwide in the fall. The 15-city tour will include both a screening of the film and a talk by Smith, akin to the shows he's long staged on college campuses and other venues.
"Fanbase is already paying 60, 65 bucks to see me stand there by myself, sweating, fatty, go like, 'I got thrown off a plane once,' " Smith laughed, referencing the Southwest Airlines incident in which he was chucked from a plane for being overweight.
Smith originally wanted to kick off the tour at Carnegie Hall, the same venue he sold out for a talk last year. But the venue was already booked, so they settled on another iconic New York theater: Radio City Music Hall. The venue holds almost 6,000 people, and while Smith doesn't expect to be able to fill all those seats, he'll be able to show off the film in a high-profile setting and start to pay back his investors.
To all his detractors, who scoff at the idea of $60 for a movie and talk, Smith has one thing to say: "Wait till October and you'll see it for, like, 10 bucks in a multiplex."

Last August we discovered that pop superstar Justin Bieber was working on a 3-D movie. While details about the project were scant, the basic plot was outlined as footage that was a mix of Bieber's personal life and concert performances.
Soon after the movie was announced though, Oscar-winning "An Inconvenient Truth" director Davis Guggenheim dropped out, leaving the project in peril. But it was back on again a few weeks later when Jon Chu came onboard to helm the flick.
"[It's] a movie for his fans, a movie for people who don't know him, and we're gonna tell the underdog story of where he came from," Chu explained in August. "Because it's a really fascinating story and it has a lot to do with our sort of digital lifestyle now. He was able to do what corporations try to do now when they use YouTube and they don't even know what to do with it yet. It's a pretty cool story for our time."
With the project in full swing, Bieber hit New York's iconic Madison Square Garden on August 31 to shoot the film's concert footage. Lucky fans at that show got an early teaser knowing that superstars like Miley Cyrus and Usher would appear in the film.
The film remained without a title until mid-October, when Bieber's team slowly rolled out an epic puzzle that revealed the project would be called "Justin Bieber: Never Say Never." A few weeks later, first trailer the dropped and it included interviews with fans and family and vintage Bieber video.
In November, MTV News caught up with Bieber at his book signing and he described the film as "inspiring." The following month, he revealed that he'd seen some of the film and that it was "amazing."
"I mean, I'm always nervous. We're always trying to make our movies better," Chu told us in December. "[Justin's] been very supportive, he and his family and his team. I'm excited to share it with the world and show another side of 3-D. With 'Step Up 3D,' we learned a lot of lessons and we discovered a lot of things, and it's just the beginning."
After obsessing over the trailer for weeks, fans were treated to a "Never Say Never" poster in late January.
"Especially for this generation of kids, [it's important to show] that they could make it on their own without a big corporation," Chu told us when we caught up with him earlier this month. "I thought it was an exciting way to tell it: through his music."
On February 3, Bieber hit the Big Apple to premiere the flick, which features a new track, "Born to Be Somebody." A week later he premiered the movie in Los Angeles, where even the star's celebrity fans admitted to having Bieber Fever
So what does Bieber think fans will take away from the flick?
"People didn't really know," the Biebs told MTV News in L.A. "They didn't understand that I've been playing music ever since I was born and it's always been in me. And this movie is really going to show that I'm not just some packaged thing that some A&R put together. It was actually just me living my dream and just making music."
