'Eisner was a participant in, and inspiration for, much of the best in American comics,' artist Scott McCloud wrote of legendary creator.

Comic legend Will Eisner was honored Sunday (March 6), on what would have been his 94th birthday, with a creative Google Doodle that references the author's most famous works as interpreted by artist Scott McCloud.
The drawing shows the eyes of Eisner's most well-known creation, The Spirit (aka Denny Colt), substituting for the two "Os" in Google, flanked by buildings taken from his graphic novels about NYC drawn to look like the other letters.
"He died in 2005, but for six decades, Eisner was a participant in, and inspiration for, much of the best in American comics, as well as a friend and mentor to multiple generations of comics artists," McCloud wrote of why he chose to honor Eisner on the Official Google Blog. "For most of his career, Eisner was years, even decades, ahead of the curve. I saw him debating artists and editors half his age, and there was rarely any question who the youngest man in the room was."
Though perhaps best known as the creator of the strip "The Spirit," which was made into a 2008 film directed by Frank Miller, Eisner was also a pioneer of the graphic novel format. He was recognized for his achievements with the 1987 creation of The Will Eisner Comic Industry Awards, given each year to exemplary examples of craft in comics. Over the years, recipients have included such celebrated titans as Brian K. Vaughan, Alan Moore and Ed Brubaker.
Not content to simply tell amusing stories, however, Eisner endeavored to take full advantage of the educational value of comics, a plan of attack evident as far back as World War II when he began integrating drawings into Army magazines.
"I remember talking to my commander officer, who was a lieutenant colonel in charge of the newspaper, saying the problem with [the Army's Preventive Maintenance Program] was that it required a voluntary contribution and that the best instructional material that could be produced for this thing was in the comic form," Eisner told MTV News' Brian Jacks in an interview four years before his death. "I was convinced that comics as a medium was a fine instructional tool and was capable of far more than the usual entertainment, gag-a-day stuff."
That commitment continued through the 50s and then into the Korean and Vietnam Wars, where Eisner worked on publications such as "Army Motors," and "P.S. Magazine" among others.
"I became far more interested in the use of comics as an instructional medium than I was as an entertainment medium. I felt that was a new channel for the use of comics," Eisner said. "I started a company called American Visuals Corporation, which was using comics as a teaching tool for industrial purposes. We had companies like General Motors and U.S. Steel, and organizations who had a lot of employees and were looking for pamphlets to distribute to their employees and instruct them."
That the letters in McCloud's art piece are drawn in the style of his New York buildings might have pleased the complex Eisner, who told MTV News of his special connection to the city after the attacks of September 11.
"Even though here I am in Florida, far, far away, I felt very much as though I was there," Eisner said. "I carry within me, as most New Yorkers do, subconsciously or subliminally I should say, the feeling that New York City is a place that is a confined environment. That's the best way I could put it. You spend most of your life in New York City walking through concrete canyons. There isn't room for physical escape from any real danger. The dangers in New York City are all very close to you."
Eisner died on January 3, 2005.

Event planners imagine what kind of party they'd throw the superstar.

Justin Bieber is about to reach another milestone in his life: On Tuesday (March 1), the teen star turns 17. Already, he's had hit albums and singles, a world tour and a successful concert documentary, so he definitely has a reason to celebrate. As he gears up for the fun, MTV News asked some party planners to weigh in on what kind of bash they would throw for the pop superstar.
"I think, knowing that he's such a fan of purple, I would create a purple Willy Wonka fantasy party," said Bruce Starr, who works at BMF Media Group in New York. "I think we'd do it in L.A. on a studio lot and have the Oompa Loompas in purple. We'd recreate this extravagant fantasy world."
Starr said he'd have a female DJ on the decks, but also would have some musical surprises up his sleeve. "We'd have a surprise stage, and without telling him, work with his friends and have them do surprise sets for him," he explained. "The party would have just friends and family, about 250 or 300 or 400 people tops — really intimate."
There would even be a fan element to the party. "I think we would do huge screens for all the people who couldn't be there. We'd have surprise music videos from them, and throughout the candy land, there'd be screens with tweets from his fans," he added.
Taylor Choi, event consultant for Gansevoort Hotel Group, explained that she'd have the perfect Big Apple hot spot for the party. "For him, I would do something more fun and exciting," she mused. "I would do more like bowling or video games, some sort of 3-D type party with more technology-type stuff for him."
So, what types of social media would that include? "A social-media kiosk where people can take photos," she explained. "I would do karaoke and do something more fun and interactive. I would have a fun DJ and a fun live performance because a performance would be fun."
As for the venue, Choi said: "If he was in New York, I would throw it in the Gansevoort Park Avenue where we could do a 3-D installation. We can do a performance over the pool. We would deck it out for him with three floors. I'd serve cupcakes, hot dogs, burgers.
"I would have like 200 of his closest friends," she added. "I would definitely do 3-D stuff. He'd have fun with a small group of friends: private, intimate, nothing too crazy. Have his friends perform a song for him."
While it seems these planners would throw elaborate bashes for the star, Bieber recently revealed that he's hoping for a low-key affair.
"I only have, like, four days, so I'm just going to relax, because I start my world tour starting on [March 4] — so just going to mentally prepare and just relax," Bieber explained. "No birthday bash. ... Hopefully my grandparents will be out here, and I'll be able to spend time, a little bit, with them. My grandma makes the best cheesecake — cherry cheesecake. She made that for my 13th birthday."

Chris Brown took a break from dying his hair blonde and snapping X-rated full frontal naked pics to drop another track off his upcoming F.A.M.E. album.
Decide if we love his new joint "Bomb" featuring Wiz Khalifa when you read on....
Breezy and Wizzy have hit a few stages together recently as Wiz brought him out a couple times for his "Black & Yellow" performances.
Anywho, "Bomb" reminds me a bit of Esther Dean's "Drop It Low," which Chris was featured on. The new track, talking mainly about how badly they want to get it in with sexy ladies, is produced by Free School and appears on Breezy's F.A.M.E. album dropping March 22nd.

Ever wonder what you might get Justin Bieber for his 17th birthday? Well, the pop star has the answer. In honor of his big day, he's working with the nonprofit Charity: Water, requesting that his fans donate money to the cause that brings clean water to developing nations.
"I have had an incredible year and it is all due to the fans helping me live my dream. I'm turning 17 years old on Tuesday [March 1] and have so much to be grateful for!" Bieber wrote on the charity's website. "So this year, I really want my birthday to be all about helping others. Instead of asking for gifts, I'm asking friends, family and fans to consider donating $17 for my 17th birthday to help make a change," he continued. "One hundred percent of all donations go directly to building clean water projects in developing countries with Charity: Water, and we'll be able to see photos and GPS of the projects we helped build!"
The teen star then gave his fans some facts about why they should get involved. "Together, we've made a big difference for many causes. Did you know that about 4,500 kids die each day from waterborne disease?" he shared. "By building clean water projects for villages that need them, we can prevent this! I want to make my birthday matter this year — let's make it so more kids can grow up to have a 17th birthday like me. Join me to make a change.
"I'm really so grateful for my family, friends and fans — and I believe we can do something big to help bring clean water to people in need," he added. "Even if you don't have $17 to give, I just ask you to go out in your community and try and make a positive difference. Even the smallest act of kindness can go a long way. Thanks and God Bless! #makeachange."
As it turns out, his call has already been answered by his fans. Charity: Water tweeted, " Thanks to all you Beliebers, we hit $7 million raised on mycharity: water today! #makeachange."
